Oasis

Postby Inscrutable » Thu Jan 17, 2013 5:06 pm

I am working on making a desert-style challenge Map called Oasis.
I have set up a first-draft world on the server called Oasis, using a few
custom Biomes and trees. There will be a few small Oases with trees and water,
in the otherwise endless desert, and some sunken Badlands.

I am making it in from-image mode, so we can easily remake if needed.
(I did that already once, due to an overabundance of desert foliage).
If you think the map needs to be bigger, or the oases further apart, or
smaller, or other tweaks, feel free to comment here. It's a WIP.

It presently lacks villages (luck of the draw, I guess) so I may try to
regenerate it and see if we can get lucky there. If I do, we may have to
manually add trees (all the BO2 objects can be placed via command).

Why am I doing this? Because it will be a resource/survival challenge map,
where, for example, a few players can collaborate to occupy an Oasis.
Further rules/restrictions/tweaks can later be applied (eg adventure mode,
an obsidian boundary wall, Cave Ore Veins (or other ore redistribution),
global MCEdit replacement of block types, etc.).

Feel free to wander the present Oasis world and see what you think, make
suggestions, and help us flesh out this as a possible challenge map.
(or just a fun map, you could be Paul Muad'Dib and movecraft some sandworms).

Further down the track I would like to do something similar with an Island map,
(ocean instead of desert), and perhaps even the extreme option of making the
desert height 10, a few small Oases, and occasional Mountains that go to the
roof of the world - they would be the only place you'll be able to find minerals.

A new idea has dawned on me: an Arrakis style map (Dune, by Frank Herbert).
Here's the germ of the idea, as much a note to myself as sharing the concept:

I can make deserts that have SAND instead of Stone underground, so caves can be sandworm
tunnels, and be very very scary when mining. It would be a bit hard on Wgen, so pregen map is a must.
I should also add Emeralds to at least one biome so they can be found on the world...

I can place rocky, grassless outcrops standing isolated in the sea of Dunes.
Within those I could place underground lakes, or deep caves, or hidden oases.
(Note to self: I should use the Dune biome, too).
Cacti would be rare, so I'd turn off all foliage in the desert.
(Too much foliage occurs by default anyway, with no way of turning it down further afaik, just off.)
Perhaps leave a few odd shrub types for the Oases and maybe mountains.

I could create a rare BOB2 object called Sandworm Maw, that spawns below shallow sand
and when players dig above, the hanging sand colapses into it...
